Visiting Speaker Roopa Vasudevan

Roopa's speech was very intriguing because it reflects many problems new media artists or creators face in the digital age. The example of the Twitter bot is very relevant and somehow frustrating; Twitter decided to create such a thing for users but they also decided to limit new developer apps. This process is completely decided by Twitter and creators couldn't do a single thing. Things like this ( also the Google selfie thing) not only demonstrate how powerless we are under the control of these mainstream technology companies but also show the potential danger of data control. For example, the Google Art selfie app is providing users with a fun service, but in reality, while someone is eager to use that service, he/she taps the "I agree" without really knowing what he/she has signed up to. Why does Google want all these face data?

We really have no where to hide. Information and consents are being exploited so easily throughout the internet, and one must be very cautious to protect his/her own identity & info ( which is almost impossible for anyone that goes online).
